BACKGROUND

  • Congolese refugees in Nairobi: The endless war and conflict in Eastern Kivu has resulted in hundreds of thousands of people fleeing their territory and seeking refuge in neighboring countries.
  • The UN Security Council has documented the deterioration of security in Eastern Congo, while the plan to resolve the conflict has been failing. Furthermore, the current situation remains unpredictable, so the future of Congolese people is uncertain.
  • Of the hundreds of thousands who have fled Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, around 70% are young people. Caring for them provides a foundational future hope for the country.
  • Many young people suffer from Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), HIV and AIDS.
  • Many young people engage in sexual relationships outside marriage, resulting in unplanned pregnancies among young girls.
  • In this community there is also a high incidence of school dropout, drug abuse, glue sniffing, juvenile delinquency and gang membership.
  • Many young people lack Bible-based spiritual foundations and conduct, values and self-esteem.
  • Technology often has a negative impact on youth psychologically and spiritually.
  • Our most powerful resources are the young people we seek to serve. The experience, perspective and power of children and youth is critical because they are strong, vibrant and committed.
  • The new generation is at the center of the change that so many funders would like to support, because transformed young lives have a lasting impact on a nation.
  • EPLT has 3 sections:
  • Youth (main section)
  • Women’s empowerment (including widows and orphans)
  • Elderly and disabled
